About Gry Nergård

From: A tiny village with only 1587 residents, high up in the mountains in the middle of Norway.

Business name: Ryttercoachen, literally meaning (Horse) Rider Coach in English.

Describe your coaching business in one sentence: I’m a mindset coach and life mastery teacher for riders and horse people with a mission to help them achieve their personal success and podium victory.

All kind of riders come to me, both competition riders at a high level and women who want to start riding again after an accident, as well as leisure riders who want to improve their skills, set some goals and find time for riding when life is busy.

Meet Gry:

QUESTION 1: What one book should every coach read – and why?

This is a difficult question, because there are so many great books and authors. When I started to learn NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) I read a lot from Richard Bandler and John Grinder, Virginia Satir, Milton Erickson, Robert Dilts. But one man made it all so simple, and that man is Eckhart Tolle with “The Power of Now”. This book spoke to me because it was all so simple. Maybe this wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t worked a lot on my own issues and also with clients, using TFT (Thought Field Therapy) and NLP techniques. I think I was ready for this simple yet challenging way of healing the body and mind.

QUESTION 2: Which website do you visit the most?

For business, I visit Sigrun.com. I think Sigrun has lots of great content and she is a person who takes action and for me she is a great role model. I think this is the website I visited most the past 6 months.

QUESTION 3: Whom do you admire most?

It’s really difficult to pick one person. I admire people who stand out and are brave living their own life, using their potential and story to help and guide others. If I think in a historic perspective, well it would be easy to pick Martin Luther King. But I think there are a lot of brave women out there who are worth admiring like Mother Teresa,  or great young speakers with a message and good content. In my childhood I admired my best friend’s father, our neighbor. He was a great person from whom I learned good values and beliefs.

QUESTION 4: What’s your vision for your life? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

My vision is to live my life through my heart and soul. I’m 53 years old now and I feel I’m more and more on track. In 5 years, I’ll live my vision fully and I’ll be surrounded with people who also live through their heart and soul. And of course I’ll still help and teach people to have the same life as I have and so they can connect in a deep level of respect with other humans and animals, in my case, horses.

QUESTION 5: What is your “big project” at the moment?

My big project is to build my coaching business online and to have summer school in the mountains, where my students can come and bring their horses, learn and ride in the most beautiful environment.

QUESTION 6: What has been your favourite coaching moment so far?

It’s hard to pick just one moment. But the first memory that hits me was when I was coaching a women who had an identity like she was a doormat, with absolutely no self-worth at all. She couldn’t stand up for herself and was so depressed. After 2 coaching sessions I told her to lay down on my office floor, and I pretended to use her as a doormat. This session turned out to be a breakthrough and turning point. Then she was ready to take some action and use her power to say NO, and to gain respect from herself and her family.

When it comes to competition riders, my biggest moment was at a world championship where I coached one of the participants on the national team just before she was going onto the track. She was so nervous to fail, so we worked with that issue. After the ride, she told me that she hadn’t been nervous at all, and she was so happy and had her best result ever.

QUESTION 7: What are your Top 3 favourite coaching tools and/or resources?

  1. The Disney Method (developed by Robert Dilts)
  2. Working with values
  3. Phobia Cure (NLP Exercise) to get rid of limiting beliefs

QUESTION 8: What do you love most about being a coach?

Helping people.

QUESTION 9: Tell us a secret about you…

I’m afraid to be in a big city.

QUESTION 10: If you could change one thing in our world, what would it be? And how would you go about it?

If I could change one single thing I would take my magic wand and make all people in the world start to have a growth mindset, acting from their soul and heart. My mission is to influence so many people as possible through my coaching business.
